Enable your hardware — camera & microphone troubleshooting

A quick guide to unblock your camera and microphone so you can start your assessment.

Introduction

If you see the "Enable your hardware" message, it simply means that Google Chrome and your computer haven't both granted access to your camera and microphone yet. Don't worry, this is almost always fixed in just a few clicks. Follow the steps below and you'll be ready to go in under a minute.

Quick checks before you start

Before adjusting any settings, please make sure that:

  • You are using a computer (not a phone or tablet).

  • You opened the assessment in Google Chrome.

You have closed any other app that might be using your camera or microphone (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, Google Meet, etc.).

💡 If a video call app is open in the background, it can "lock" your camera. Quitting it fully usually solves the issue right away.

1. Allow camera & microphone in Chrome

  • Click the small icon on the left side of the address bar (it looks like a tune/settings icon or a lock).

  • Open Site settings.

  • Set both Camera and Microphone to Allow.

  • Refresh the page.


2. Allow camera & microphone in your computer settings

Even when Chrome has permission, your operating system also needs to allow it. Follow the steps for your device.

On Windows

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to Privacy & securityCamera.

  3. Turn on all the toggles (especially "Camera access" and "Let apps access your camera").

  4. Go back and repeat the same steps for Microphone.

On Mac

  1. Open System Settings.

  2. Go to Privacy & SecurityCamera.

  3. Toggle Google Chrome on.

  4. Go back and repeat the same steps for Microphone.

💡 On Mac, you may be asked to quit and reopen Chrome for the change to take effect. That's normal.

3. Fully quit Chrome and reopen it

Close all Chrome windows, then reopen Chrome and return to your assessment using the link from your invitation email.
