Typing tests assess a candidate’s typing speed and accuracy which are crucial for roles that involve heavy data entry, administrative tasks, customer service, transcription and content creation. Employers often require typing tests as part of their assessments because they directly impact operational efficiency, client satisfaction and the ability to deliver high quality services within competitive industry standards.

Scoring Methodology of Maki’s Typing Test

The scoring process for the typing test involves different key calculations and considerations. It meticulously calculates different metrics under Words per Minute (WPM) and accuracy that are highlighted below to provide a comprehensive assessment of one’s typing skills.

Word Per Minute

  • Gross WPM: this is calculated by dividing the number of characters typed by 5 (the average number of characters in a word), and this is then divided by the total typing duration (time it took for the candidate to finish the test in minutes).

  • Net WPM: this metric provides a more accurate measurement of typing efficiency by adding accuracy into the equation. This is calculated by subtracting the number of errors per minute between the typed answer and the correct answer.

  • Adjusted WPM: this metric is calculated by multiplying the Gross WPM by the accuracy percentage. This balances typing speed and accuracy, offering a more comprehensive evaluation of a candidate’s typing skills.

Accuracy

  • Levenshtein Distance: this is to quantify the difference between the candidate’s response and the correct answers, providing a measure of errors made during typing.

  • Accuracy Percentage: this is calculated by subtracting the Levenshtein Distance from the normalized reference length (the length of the correct answer), then dividing it by the normalized reference length, and multiplying by 100 to obtain a percentage. This offers insight into the precision of the candidate’s typing abilities.

Participants are then categorized into groups on their gross WPM sores, ranging from below average speed to competitive speed which helps in quickly identifying the typing proficiency level of the applicant. The average typing speed of a person is around 40 words per minute so if the applicant has a net of 70 WPM or higher, they will have an overall score of 100%.
